“European Initiative 2026” for Forest Firefighting

EU Launches Strategic Initiative to Combat Wildfires with AI-Powered Drone Swarms

In March 2026, the European Commission intensified its efforts to strengthen the Union’s “technological sovereignty” in civil security. Following a series of devastating wildfire seasons, the Commission announced a new funding framework aimed at integrating advanced aerial robotics into the rescEU and Horizon Europe programs.

  • Tenders & Funding: A specific call for “demand-led innovation in security” is set to open on May 15, 2026, with a budget of approximately €5.8 million. This funding is dedicated to pre-commercial procurement of systems capable of early fire detection and autonomous coordination with ground crews.
  • Next-Gen Technology: The focus has shifted from single-operator drones to autonomous drone swarms. These units are equipped with high-resolution thermal imagers and gas-analysis sensors. Unlike standard equipment, these swarms are designed to operate in extreme conditions, including zero-visibility smoke and high-velocity winds, providing real-time data to command centers.
  • Strategic Goal: By reducing dependence on non-European technologies, the EU aims to create a self-sufficient ecosystem for disaster response, ensuring that the next generation of firefighting tools is developed and manufactured within the Member States.
